The aftermath was harsh for Topuria; not only did he suffer his first loss in MMA and the loss of the lightweight title, but he was also physically beaten up, with both orbital bones broken along with his nose and other injuries. But despite the loss and the injuries, “El Matador” tried to keep a positive outlook.\n\n“I never really cried, I never was really sad,” Topuria told One on One MMA. “It happened. It is what it is. I’m not gonna torture myself because of what happened. It was sad; it was a shitty situation. Just imagine, in one of the most important moments of my life, I had four broken bones. I had my two orbital bones broken, I had my nose broken, I had my foot broken.\n\n“So I was in front of the President of the United States, in front of a lot of people, in front of millions and millions of people behind the cameras, and I was almost blind. I couldn’t breathe [without] a lot of pain. It was a weird experience, but at the same time, I’m glad I had that experience, because it taught me that it doesn’t matter how hard life can punch you or treat you or whatever; life continues. You can let yourself live with the experience of the past and with all the things that happened to you, and you just have to keep going. That’s life. You don’t always win.”\n\nOfficially, Topuria lost by fourth-round TKO after his brother stopped the bout between rounds, given Topuria’s inability to see, a decision that Topuria says ultimately saved his career.\n\n“Listen, in myself, me personally, I wouldn’t say, ‘Stop it,’ but I respect the decision that my brother took in that moment. I would do the same. Because I couldn’t see. I couldn’t open my eyes. In the second round — I don’t remember if it was in the second or third round — when the doctor came in and just asked me, ‘Can you see?’ I’m like, I can’t see. I’m sweating; I have my eye full of blood. I feel like I have thousands of crystals in my eye. So weird.\n\n“Listen, I dedicated my entire life to this sport. I saw many sparring sessions, many fights. I’ve done this for my entire life, but I never saw someone with two orbital bones broken, two bones broken, with his foot broken, in a fight. That was so weird, like, I remember the thoughts I had in the fight. Like, ‘Why, in one of the most important moments in my life, I can’t see, I can’t breathe, it’s so weird. And I have a guy in front of me that has everything but not good intentions. He wants to take my head off.’ It’s a weird place to be.”\n\n“100 percent. If he wouldn’t have stopped the fight, probably I wouldn’t be able to fight again in my life,” Topuria continued.\n\n“I’m so grateful with my brother that he decided to stop me, because I love what I’m doing. I had a bad experience, but I still have a lot of things ahead of me. So it would be very sad to me if I would hear from a doctor or anyone that I wouldn’t be able to fight anymore.”\n\nSpeaking with ABC.es, Topuria went into greater detail about how continuing could have ended his career.\n\n“The doctors later told me that after the fracture I suffered in my orbital, fat seeped inside, and if it had seeped in by just 0.5 millimeters more, they would have had to put in a titanium plate, and I would never have been able to fight again. That could easily have happened in the fifth round. In fact, there was a moment in the fourth round when he connected with a knee to my body, and all I wanted was for him not to hit my face. My eyes were burning, like someone had broken a bottle and thrown glass in them; it was a very strange sensation.”\n\nTopuria has been out of action since the fight, and intends to remain so until next year, saying in January he’ll be able to return to full training, at which point he’ll assess his comeback timeline, likely for April or May. And when he does return, a rematch with Gaethje is high on his priority list.\n\n“I would love it. Why not?” Topuria told One on One MMA. “I want to have my rematch. And it’s going to happen, at some point. He’s talking about retirement and all that, but it was the biggest moment in his lifetime, to fight against me, to fight in the White House. Whenever he’s going to remember the biggest moment in his life, for sure it’s going to be the fight that we had. And the most amount of money that he made in his life also was against me, and I don’t think that he’s going to retire without one more paycheck. Because he’s not going to have that paycheck with any other guy as an opponent. …\n\n“It’s gonna be a huge fight. And as I told you, you put me against anyone right now, and I’m gonna change their life financially, and the bad part is I’m gonna change their life physically, also. Because now they are going to face a man that saw everything in this sport. Nothing scares me.”","Jed Meshew",[40,25],"rss"]
